A “Camouflage Wedding” in the Woods

Cindy & Bob Lussier Wedding: 10/16/10

After an early morning departure, I made it to the turn-off point from the main road in Darlington, SC around 9:30. From there I continued over a small bridge onto Witherspoon Island and had to drive through the woods over a long stretch of soft, sandy road. At times my tires would over spin from loss of traction and I became aware that bogging down was a real concern. Still, as I drove further off the beaten track, I was impressed with how pretty the Island was—and remote. I came to a fork in the sandy road and was happy to see a paper sign with the word, “weddin’” and an arrow pointing left. A little further I reached the reception site: Howard’s Hunting Camp. It was a sure bet this was the place, because set out in the front of the old wooden lodge were tables, each covered with white paper which was weighed down against the wind by a couple of vases containing a pretty bouquet of flowers, interspersed with decorative turkey feathers conceivably plucked from recent hunts. At one corner, I spotted my table under “the DJ’s canopy.” Nearby was a small, electric generator. It didn’t take long to get the lay of the land.
