Best Man Introduction: Big Bad John

A Little Background

We all knew Rachel & Jason's wedding was going to be engaging and fun, and months earlier had planned to incorporate Jimmy Dean's number 1 song from the 60's, "Big Bad John," to introduce Jason's Best Man, John Tarrell in conjunction with his toast. See, John, though not exceedingly large in stature, had a reputation, and liked to think of himself as big and bad. During the Grand Entrance, his short introductory narration bringing him into the banquet room was, "Jason and he grew up together, and together they've survived it all, including car races and bar fights. Our Best Man: John Terrell!"

"Big Bad John"

The toasts were scheduled at the completion of the meal, and started quite ordinarily with this introduction for the Maid of Honor: "She's Rachel's cousin, our Maid of Honor, let's make her feel right at home: Amanda Stiltner!" Then it was time for John's toast. "Jason's longtime friend, our Best Man, join me in welcoming: John Terrell!" Instantly, I played a snatch of the song ("Big John, Big John, Big Bad John.") which helped elicit an enthusiastic welcome filled with laughter, cheers and applause: And, as John concluded his toast and returned to his seat, I played another snatch of the song ("Big John, Big John, Big John.") accompanied by more appreciative laughter and applause:
